FBI arrests 3 more protesters as standoff winds down

BURNS, Ore. — The standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge seemed to be winding down early Thursday as eight people left the refuge and were met by FBI and Oregon State Police at checkpoints. Three protesters were arrested and five were freed.
Before the checkpoints were established, several other cars left the refuge without incident, authorities said.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. PT, the FBI made probable cause arrests of Duane Leo Ehmer, 45, of Irrigon, Ore., and Dylan Wade Anderson, 34, of Provo, Utah, according to a release by the law enforcement agencyAt approximately, 7:40 p.m., agents made a probable cause arrest of Jason S. Patrick, 43, of Bonaire, Ga. All were in contact with the FBI, and each chose to turn himself into agents at a checkpoint outside the refuge. The arrests were without incident, authorities said.

Each man faces one federal felony count of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation, or threats, the same charge leveled against the protesters arrested Tuesday.
Law enforcement set up a pair of large floodlights that lit up the road, and the apparent FBI checkpoint, in the pitch blackness about 7 miles from the refuge headquarters. As reporters waited, coyotes could be heard wailing loudly in the distance.
A father and son pair from Hermiston, Ore., who wanted to reach the refuge were turned away at gunpoint when they reached the checkpoint.
Early in the evening a group of eight unmarked sport-utility vehicles that were presumed to be police left in a convoy headed towards Burns. It was unknown if any of the arrested men were inside.
Later, several large armored police trucks came up to the roadblock with lights flashing. A man’s voice on a loudspeaker told media to disperse immediately, and said cars in the way would be run over.
Earlier Wednesday militia leader Ammon Bundy urged his followers to leave, according to a statement released by his attorney.
Bundy's lawyer, Mike Arnold, read a statement by Bundy, arrested Tuesday, on the steps of a courthouse in Portland.

"Right now, I am asking the federal government to allow the people at the refuge to go home without being prosecuted," the statement read. "To those remaining at the refuge, I love you. Let us take this fight from here. Please stand down. Go home and hug your families. This fight is ours for now in the courts. Please go home."
The statement also paid tribute to Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, the protester who died on Tuesday, as federal and state authorities arrested Bundy and seven others during a traffic stop on Highway 395 between the  Malheur National Wildlife Refuge refuge and John Day, Ore. Bundy and the protesters had holed up at the refuge since Jan. 2. Authorities said the arrests came after futile efforts to end the standoff peacefully for 25 days.Bundy's reported request came after mounting pressure from authorities for the protesters to abandon the site.
"They have chosen to threaten and intimidate the America they profess to love and through their criminal actions bring these consequences upon themselves," said Greg Bretzing, FBI special agent in charge, said earlier Wednesday.
In a particularly emotional statement before reporters, Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward spoke directly to the remaining half-dozen holdouts at the refuge.
"It is time for everybody in this illegal occupation to move on," Ward said, stopping periodically to regain his composure. "There doesn't have to be bloodshed in our community. (When) we have issues with the way things are in our government, we have a responsibility as citizens to act on them in an appropriate manner. We don't arm up, we don't rebel. We work through the appropriate channels. This can't happen anymore, this can't happen in America, and it can't happen in Harney County."
The brief statements by the FBI, sheriff and federal prosecutor came one day after law enforcement officers stopped a group of the protesters at a roadblock about 20 miles north of the refuge.Finicum, the soft-spoken but defiant co-leader of the protest group, was shot and killed. Officials refused to provide details, but the 56-year-old Arizona resident’s identity was confirmed by his family.
Ward said officials might have been able to wait longer to move against the protesters if they had not "created a lot of stress" in the community.
"Some of these folks have spent a lot of time in town trying to stir up issues in the community," he said. "It has been tearing our community apart."Bundy is the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a high-profile 2014 standoff with the government over grazing rights. Finicum's death was also reported on the Bundy Ranch page on Facebook.
The elder Bundy said the fatal shooting and arrests should be a "wake-up call to America."
"This is a total disaster to be happening in America, where we have federal people killing innocent people," he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "My sons were there to do good."

Kanye West and Amber Rose’s Never-Ending Soap Opera

http://adf.ly/1W1lJr

I am your OG and I will be respected as such,’ West tweeted to Wiz Khalifa, before unloading on his ex-girlfriend. But this is really about Kanye and Amber’s long, sordid history.

We all have our New Year’s resolutions. For most, these consist of steps toward self-improvement—joining a gym, participating in a “Dry January,” saving money, or quitting smoking. Kanye West’s New Year’s resolution was, it seems, to tweet like there’s no tomorrow.
http://adf.ly/1W1lJr
And god bless him for it.
It came in response to Kanye changing the name of his upcoming album from Swish toWaves, with Wiz claiming the name “waves” belonged to Harlem rapper Max B, who released a string of Coke Waves mixtapes before being convicted on charges of aggravated assault, felony kidnapping, armed robbery, and murder. He’s currently serving a 75-year prison sentence.Max B is closely affiliated with fellow New York rapper French Montana, who is the ex-boyfriend of Kim’s sister Khloe Kardashian.
West paid respect to Max B via a tweet, and things seemed to be on ice. Then, early Wednesday morning, rapper Wiz Khalifa fired off an innocuous tweet: “Hit this kk and become yourself.” Khalifa Kush (KK) is the name of the rapper’s strain of marijuana. In a 2014 interview, he discussed how he has people grow the strain specifically for him, and that same year, he released a song called “KK” with lines like, “I got my own weed, sucka / So I ain’t gotta hit yours.” KK are also the initials of Kanye’s ultra-famous wife, Kim Kardashian.
So Kanye, thinking Wiz was tweeting about his beloved wife, flew into a Twitter rage, verbally undressing every facet of the rapper’s existence, from his style (“I screen grabbed those pants and sent it to my style team”) to his music (“no one I know has ever listened to one of your albums all the way through”) to his JV status (“I am your OG and I will be respected as such”). A large portion of Kanye’s ire was directed at Wiz’s ex-wife, Amber Rose, and their child, with Kanye tweeting, “You let a stripper trap you” and “I know you mad every time you look at your child that this girl got you for 18 years”).It should be noted here that Kanye was completely out of line from the get-go, using the occasion of a terribly misinterpreted tweet to take low blows at Wiz’s ex-wife and child. If anyone said the same about Kardashian and North or Saint West, you can rest assured that Kanye would go full-Bride, showing up at Wiz’s house in a form-fitting yellow-and-black tracksuit clenching Hattori Hanzo steel.
This isn’t the first (or tenth) time Kanye has slut-shamed Rose, whom he dated from 2008 to 2010 after he spotted her in the music video for Ludacris’ “What Them Girls Like.” In February of last year, Kanye appeared on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club and unloaded on his ex.
“She’s just soaking in the moment,” Kanye said of Rose. “If Kim had dated me when I wanted, there would be no Amber Rose.” He later doubled down, saying he had to take “30 showers” after dating Rose before Kim would accept him.
But the origins of this hip-hop imbroglio are hard to define.
Kanye and Rose were very hot and heavy during their three-year relationship, which was immortalized in a very hot-and-heavy, head-licking photo shoot with Terry Richardson. When they split in early 2010, Kanye went into self-imposed exile in Hawaii to work on an album dedicated to Rose, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. The song “Runaway,” in particular, is seen as an open apology to Rose for the way he treated her throughout their relationship.
“She find pictures in my e-mail / I sent this bitch a picture of my dick / I don’t know what it is with females / But I’m not too good with that shit,” raps Kanye. “See, I could have me a good girl / And still be addicted to them hoodrats / And I just blame everything on you / At least you know that’s what I’m good at.“Kim is one of the main reasons why me and Kanye are not together,” Rose said in an “exclusive” interview with Star magazine. “She’s a homewrecker!”
According to Rose, Kanye and Kim were hooking up while she was still with Kanye and Kim was dating Bush.
“They were both cheating,” said Rose. “They were both cheating on me and Reggie with each other. [Kim] was sending [racy] pictures, and I was like, ‘Kim, just stop. Don’t be that person.’ I thought at least she’d be woman enough to respond to me. She never responded.”
“I want to thank her,” Rose continued of Kim.  “Because if she was never a homewrecker, then I never would have met Wiz [Khalifa], and I wouldn’t be as happy as I am now.”
That interview took place in January 2012, and weeks later, a man who claimed to be Rose’s former publicist alleged on Twitter and Facebook that he introduced Rose to Kanye, that Rose stole from him, and that Rose was planning to steal from Kanye, blaming the latter revelation for their breakup—not Kim. Rose denied the allegations.
Kanye and Kim became official in April of that year. For the next couple of years, the two had reached a gossip column détente, with Kanye and Kim marrying and having two children, and Amber and Wiz marrying and having one child. Following Rose and Wiz’s split in late 2014, her beef with Kanye reignited.
In February 2015, Kim’s little sister Kylie Jenner (17) began dating the rapper Tyga (25). Now, Tyga has a child with the hip-hop model Blac Chyna, who is best friends with Rose. When the relationship came to light, Rose went on The Breakfast Club and blasted it.

“Kylie’s a baby,” said Rose. “She needs to go to bed at 7 o’clock and relax. It’s ridiculous. Tyga should be ashamed of himself. That’s how I feel, for sure. He has a beautiful woman and a baby that he left for a 16-year-old who just turned 17.”

Rose did make some good points—in their home state of California the Kylie/Tyga coupling qualifies as statutory rape. The interview prompted Kylie’s sister Khloe Kardashian to fire off a few tweets at Rose, labeling her a hypocrite for stripping at 15 yet criticizing Kylie for her illicit relationship with Tyga. Rose didn’t take the criticism lying down and decided to drag Kim—and by extension Kanye—into the mix:
Kanye’s infamous “30 Showers” interview on The Breakfast Club was in response to this tweet by Rose. And, if that weren’t enough, in recent weeks Rose’s pal (and Tyga’s ex) Blac Chyna has begun dating Rob Kardashian, the semi-estranged brother of Kylie, Kim, Khloe, and Co.
It’s hard to determine who’s more at fault here. If Kanye cheated on her, Rose has a right to be upset. But it’s been six years since they’ve split. The two have both moved on and started separate families, yet Rose, who is mostly famous due to her association with Kanye, seems to keep tethering herself to Kanye and the Kardashians for the considerable ink it generates. And the same goes for Blac Chyna, Tyga, and the Kardashians. The best thing Kanye can do is ignore them entirely, but he’s never been one to take an insult lying down.
When Rose caught wind of the recent Kanye-Wiz spat, and the insults he threw her way, she went for the jugular:

Abe Vigoda Fulfills Internet Meme

Thirty-four years after Abe Vigoda died, Abe Vigoda died.
Greg Galcik got a half-dozen emails within the first minute.
Friends were saying it was for real this time.“Oh my dear lord.
It’s going by too fast to see,” Galcik said, looking at his website’s numbers while talking to The Daily Beast. “We’re looking at 50 hits per second.”
Galcik owns AbeVigoda.com, which has been alerting people of Abe Vigoda’s to-the-second mortality since May 2001. This may come as a surprise, but the website was not Galcik’s full-time job. He’s a Chicago-based web developer, and he bought the domain 15 years ago off “some guy for about 200 bucks.”
Vigoda starred in The Godfather and Barney Miller, but he may be best known for having been declared dead more times by high-profile people and news organizations of any actor ever.
He was dead in 1982, when People magazine declared him absent from the Barney Millerwrap party on account of his unfortunate passing.
He was dead again in 1987, when a local news reporter did the same thing.
He was dead all throughout the next four decades on David Letterman’s show, where the late-night host consistently referred to Vigoda’s ghost or had him on just to prove he was alive. (“So Abe, you’re anything but dead,” Letterman once said. “Well, thank you,” Vigoda replied.)
He was frequently dead in Conan O’Brien’s monologue and in guest appearances on sketches, at Drew Carey’s Friar’s Club Roast (he was in the audience, alive), and on his regularly vandalized Wikipedia page all throughout the 2000s.
Abe Vigoda was dead in four decades, and Abe Vigoda was very much in on the joke.
But he was never dead on AbeVigoda.com. So on Tuesday, when Vigoda died at 94, it was hard for many on social media to trust TMZ, The New York Times, or the AP until the news was posted on Galcik’s one-off joke website.
“It’s true: The site’s had more a consistent record of accuracy than anyone else has,” he said. Lil Wayne was near death in TMZ’s world three years ago, after all, and that’s the same news organization that broke the news of Vigoda’s death.
Vigoda died of old age shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Galcik, who was on deadline for his real job, was suddenly in a race against time.
A few minutes in, he was feeling the heat. Politico’s Albany bureau chief saidAbeVigoda.com “had one job…and you blew it.”
Really, Galcik was scrambling to remember a login for a website he doesn’t use every day. Another shock: AbeVigoda.com was not the algorithmically generated insta-obituary that crawled the world’s best news sources to confirm his death. The to-the-second clock on the site was a joke.
Just like the time a hoax almost got Galcik a few years ago (he caught it just in time), on Tuesday he had to find a username and password for his site, then rifle through some code to change it all manually.
Remember, this joke is almost as old as the Internet. Indeed, Galcik and, by extension, Abe Vigoda, helped popularize a brand new style of single-service website, likeIsGlennHealyFiredYet.com (he’s a hockey commentator, and the answer is no) andIsThatcherDeadYet.co.uk (that’s about Margaret, and it’s yes).
Still, even without the fancy algorithm, about 25 minutes after the first reports, Galcik updated the most important part of AbeVigoda.com for the first and last time. He says he’ll leave it just like this for as long as he can pay the bill on the domain.
Abe Vigoda Is Dead.
And it’s a credit to the actor that he allowed the site—and the joke—to keep going all along.
Galcik had been through a web-based legal battle before Abe Vigoda entered his life, when he had a website called Dysfunctional Family Circus. The site applied truly funny (if often racy) captions to otherwise bland “Family Circus” cartoons. The comic’s creator, Bill Keane, was not amused.
Things were different with Vigoda. No one associated with Vigoda ever reached out to Galcik to take down the site. Galcik never ran ads on AbeVigoda.com as a goodwill gesture.
While the actor was a ghost on Letterman and a dead guest on Conan, AbeVigoda.comwas there to remind people he was alive all along.
“It’s a shame to see him go,” said Galcik. “I don’t really know what celebrities are really like, but he had to have a sense of humor about himself. You saw it with this.”

Kings Fall In Double-OT Heartbreaker

Despite a career-best 56-point outing from DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento fell in double overtime, 129-128.
A first half that the Kings dominated netted Sacramento a double-digit advantage going into the halftime break, 56-46.

While holding the Hornets to just 32 percent shooting, Sactown shot at a 56 percent clip, led by Rudy Gay andDeMarcus Cousins’ combined 33 first half points.
Charlotte stormed back in the second half, largely due to their 13 second half three-pointers. With 3:28 remaining, the home team trail by a margin of eight, 107-99, but an impressive late run propelled the purple and black into the lead in the final seconds of regulation, eventually leading to a 115-115 tie heading to overtime.
The overtime period started in impressive fashion, as Boogie finished a monster and-one alley-oop to increase his point total to a career-high 50. Meanwhile,Willie Cauley-Stein denied Kemba Walker on a game-winning layup attempt with 1.1 seconds remaining in OT. Neither team converted, leading to a second overtime.
As the team held an early three-point lead in the second overtime, No. 15 was called for his sixth and final personal foul on a putback attempt to extend the lead to five.Cauley-Stein scored the only field goal for the squad in the final overtime on a dunk that gave the Kings a 128-126 advantage with 11.9 seconds remaining. Hornets’ Troy Daniels sank the game-winning basket on the ensuing possession, marking his eighth three-pointer of the night and giving Charlotte a 129-128 victory.
  • DMC set a new Sacramento-era and Sleep Train Arena record with a career-high 56 points. The 56-point, 12-rebound performance was Cousins’ 26th double-double of the season and 11th straight.
  • The All-Star big man had his 2nd straight 40-point game, tying Chris Webber (2000-01) for consecutive 40-point games in the Sacramento-era.
  • Cousins’ 48 points set a new career-high and matched Kevin Martin for the most points in a regulation game in Sacramento-era history.
  • Rajon Rondo dished out 20 assists for the 2nd time this season, matching his
  • Sacramento-era record for assists in a game.
  • Rondo’s 20 assists marked the 30th game of the season with No. 9 having 10 or more assists, tying Reggie Theus for the second most double-digit assist games in Sacramento-era history.
  • The Kings now head on a three-game road trip, starting Tuesday versus the Portland Trail Blazers. Fans wishing to view the game can tune in via CSN California or KHTK SPORTS 1140 AM.

Victoria's Secret model who says she is relentlessly shamed for her body has a message for critics

Victoria's Secret model Bridget Malcolm has some words for people who think she's too thin.
"I get a lot of people telling me I'm too skinny and I'm like, 'Newsflash: I'm a model, we're skinny,'" she said in a recent interview with Elle Australia.
"I've just started to ignore it," she went on. "If you give them anything they're going to take it and run with it and make it worse. So I think I'm just rising above. And I know I'm doing a good thing by my fans. I know that I'm a healthy role model and that I'm doing the right thing. I also know that I don't have an eating disorder and that there's nothing wrong with me so I've just shut out all that nonsense now and it's been a lot nicer for it."Malcolm made waves in November when she posted a photo on Instagram bequeathing people to stop "skinny shaming."
"Can we STOP with the skinny shaming please?" She wrote at the time. "I am extremely fit and healthy and am not in the slightest way anorexic. I have worked hard to look like this and am proud of my body. I may not be the curviest but I am a woman who has every right to look the way I do. Maybe today take a look inside yourself and wonder why you feel the need to shame strangers over the Internet about their bodies. Peace and love to you all — let's change the conversation.""The Victoria's Secrets models work hard for their bodies. It's not like other types of model ling where you can get away with just being slender. These girls work hard, it's a part of their job, and I think the hashtag [#TrainLikeAnAngel] encapsulates that spirit. And so now that I am one of the Victoria's Secret models I can show people that this is what I do to stay in shape and to look the way I do," she said to Elle Australia.
She does, however, eat; she told Elle Australia that one of her guilty pleasures is "sweet potato fries."
"I don't like sweet stuff, I like fried stuff," she said. " I don't make them myself — I'm shocking in the kitchen!"
Although Malcolm's activism may seem dissonant with many body positivity movements encouraging women of all sizes to feel comfortable with their bodies, it raises a fair point — that no body, thin or fat, should be cruelly scrutinized.

Who invented the television? How people reacted to John Logie Baird's creation 90 years ago

The first live TV audience found it hard to believe that it would take off. Now the invention of the mechanical television has been marked with a Google Doodle

Ninety years ago today a moving head on a screen made history. It was the first public demonstration of live television, and the occasion is being marked with a Google Doodle. The face in question belonged to Daisy Elizabeth Gandy, the business partner of John Logie Baird. Baird is a Scottish inventor who is regarded as one of the inventors of the mechanical television.

The mechanical television, also known as “the televisor” worked a bit like a radio, but had a rotating mechanism attached that could generate a video to accompany the sound. It preceded the modern television, which creates images using electronic scanning.
In 1924 Baird managed to transmit a flickering image across a distance of 10 feet and the following year, he had a breakthrough when he achieved TV pictures with light and shade.
Within two years this flicker was the face of a woman who was in a different room.Although the pictures were small, measuring just 3.5 by 2 inches, the process was revolutionary.

“The image as transmitted was faint and often blurred, but substantiated a claim that through the ‘televisor,’ as Mr Baird has named his apparatus, it is possible to transmit and reproduce instantly the details of movement, and such things as the play of expression on the face,” wrote the reporter from the Times after the demonstration.
As innovative as the demonstration had been, the journalist wasn’t coFollowing his demonstration in 1926, he developed colour TV and brought out the world's first mass produced television set in 1929.
In September last year, an anonymous donor stepped in to prevent a recording of Baird's first transmission of transatlantic television pictures being sold to private collectors overseas.
The materials, which include a disc featuring what has been described as one of the world's earliest surviving video recordings, are now stored at the University of Glasgow along with much of the Scottish inventor's other work.
An asking price of £78,750 was put on the "treasure trove" archive and an export bar was placed on the lot to see if any British buyers would step in.nvinced that it would take off.
“It has yet to be seen to what extent further developments will carry Mr Baird’s system towards practical use,” they wrote.
Still, that was better than the reaction of the Daily Express newspaper who, when Baird approached them with the invention in 1925, kicked him out.
The news editor at the time said: “For God’s sake, go down to reception and get rid of a lunatic who’s down there. He says he’s got a machine for seeing by wireless!”

The purchase of the collection was made possible with the financial support of a businessman from Baird's hometown of Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute, who wished to remain anonymous.
The recording and radio log books, used by assistant Benjamin Clapp, contain the world's first-known use of the acronym TV.
The donor, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "[The collection] charts such an important period of modern engineering history, so I felt it could not, and should not, leave these shores to move abroad. It needs to be shared for future generations.
"John Logie Baird was a Helensburgh man and a Scottish pioneer who helped change the world, and with his ties to the University of Glasgow I think it is only right and proper that this important collection should be coming to the university, and hopefully it will help inspire future pioneering engineers."
The phonovision shellac disc, dating back to September 20 1927, is the world's oldest-surviving 78rpm video recording and features pictures of Stooky Bill, the ventriloquist's dummy Baird used when developing his revolutionary mechanical scanning broadcasts.
It was recorded during his transatlantic television trials but was not actually transmitted until February 9 1928, marking one of Baird's earliest television broadcasts

FOX naturally won Sunday’s ratings race by a huge margin thanks to the NFC Championship game, and the game — despite being a blowout — gave the return of “The X-Files” a big platform. The 10:30-11 p.m. portion of the show currently stands at 5.1 in adults 18-49.
These results are highly subject to change, as “The X-Files” started at 10:23 ET. If it stays within that range, however, the show would end up with the best post-conference title game rating since 2012 (“American Idol,” 7.9).
The only other new scripted show on Sunday was “Galavant,” which fell a tenth to 0.5. CBS’ 7 p.m. “60 Minutes” got a bit of a boost from the AFC Championship (which had the higher overnight rating of the two conference title games) and scored a 2.0.

Definitions:
Rating
: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
